Sensor Replacement Process

Moving sensor data and settings to a new sensor

Updated over 3 weeks ago

Occasionally, sensors may need to be replaced due to damage or other factors. To ensure continuity and minimize disruptions in your data, we recommend migrating your sensor's data and settings to the replacement device.

This article will guide you through the process.

Only users with Editor or Admin access to the location can make replacements.

How do I know what sensors need to be replaced?

Within AlertAQ™, navigate to the Sensors page and type "RMA" into the search bar to filter your list to sensors that need to be replaced.

  • In the list view, there will be a yellow caution icon to the left of affected sensors.

  • In the app, there will be a yellow caution icon to the right of the affected sensors.

  • In downloads from the sensors page, "RMA" will appear at the beginning of sensor names.

  • When the Sensor Details panel is open, there will be a banner at the top.

What does this tool do?

The Sensor Replacement tool transfers all data and settings from one sensor to another, including:

  • Sensor names and pictures

  • Historical events and data

  • Calibration factors (though we recommend recalibrating for the best accuracy)

  • Pairings to other Alert Labs sensors

  • Among others

How do I migrate the data?

Tip: To prevent confusion over which is the old sensor and which is the new one, mark the original sensor with a pen or marker.

  1. Remove the Original Sensor: Physically remove the original sensor from its location. This would be a great time to mark the sensor or make it distinct in some way.

  2. Access the Sensor Details: Scan the QR code at the bottom of the original sensor or find and select it from your sensors list.

  3. Initiate Sensor Replacement: A banner will appear at the top of the Sensor Details panel, indicating that the sensor needs to be replaced. Click the Replace Sensor button.

  4. Enter New Sensor Information: Scan or type in the serial number of the new, replacement sensor.

  5. Review and Confirm: Review the details of the replacement and original sensor, and click Proceed.

  6. Complete the Replacement: Click Replace New when you're ready.
Note that this process cannot be reversed.

  7. Wait for Transfer: You'll see a transferring waiting page, followed by a success message when the transfer is complete.

  8. Install the New Sensor: If you need tips or help with installing the new sensor, review the provided instructions page. You can close out whenever your new sensor is set up.

What's Next?

  • The original sensor will automatically be removed from your account and deactivated as part of this process.

  • The new sensor will have all the same data and settings as the original sensor, except for the serial number, which will be updated.

  • Return the original device: If a return label was provided with your replacement, simply reuse the packaging and label to send the marked device back to us for further review.

Do I need to use a specific sensor for the replacement?

Not for our purposes. You're free to replace the original sensor with any from your supply. However, we recommend checking with your accounting department in case your account subscriptions are divided by property. If so, they'll likely want you to replace with specific sensors to keep the subscription intact.

Are there any limitations?

  • The new sensor must be active with a paid subscription. The old sensor will be deactivated from your current subscription.

  • Sensor can only be replaced by sensors of the same type; i.e. s Sensor Relay for a Sensor Relay. The exception is a Flowie water flow sensor, which may be replaced by a Flowie-O water flow sensor.
