How to Install and Use an Antenna Extender with Alert Labs Cellular Sensors

Updated over a week ago

Understand the Purpose of the Antenna Extender

The antenna extender is a device designed to amplify the reach of the standard antenna that your Alert Labs cellular sensor comes with. It is important to note that most customers will only need the standard antenna, and extension is not generally necessary.

Determine If You Need the Antenna Extender

Your need for an antenna extender depends on the current performance of your cellular sensor. Consider using an antenna extender if:

  • Your cellular sensor shows poor cellular connectivity, which could be indicated by a steady or intermittent red light on your sensor.

  • You've received a notification from your Dashboard signaling detected connectivity issues.

Recognize Situations Where an Antenna Extender May Not Be Useful

There are some situations where an antenna extender will not improve performance. You would not need the extender if the following applies:

  • You are dealing with companion sensors, such as the Floodie.

  • Your cellular sensor already displays a strong, consistent cellular signal. You can check this visually by looking for a green light on top of your cellular sensor. You can also verify it by checking the signal strength in your Dashboard after you've registered your sensor.

  • Your location lacks any cellular coverage at all. The antenna extender cannot create a network connection where none exists. It is only useful in weak coverage areas to improve reception, not to generate it.
